JOB POSTING: Family Advocate - Transitional Shelter Program
Job Summary: The Family Advocate (FA) develops and implements a comprehensive response for and with survivors of domestic violence striving to achieve independent living at CPAF’s Transitional Shelter Program (TSP). This includes providing advocacy, emotional support and supportive services. In addition to carrying a caseload, the FA develops and coordinates the Women’s Program for up to 10 hours/week. This program emphasizes independent living skills, group counseling, parenting, healthy relationships and community living. The FA works closely with the other FA’s, interns and volunteers to ensure an effective and holistic response to all residents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct Services: Coordinates orientation, intake and assessment of families into TSP; develops and updates goal-oriented action plans with women & children; provides emotional support/counseling services, case management and maintains up-to-date files on clients and program activities; works with other teams to coordinate supportive services.
- Program Development & Planning: Develops, facilitates and schedules supportive programming (i.e. Life Skills workshops, Parenting support group, ESL, Women’s Windows, etc.) with other TSP team members, interns and volunteers for residents.
- Outreach: Represent CPAF and TSP in coalitions, network meetings and public forums. Presents and/or trains within the South Bay community on a quarterly basis to build community partnerships, provide public education and establish resources and referrals for TSP residents.
- Teamwork: Provides general support asked of all staff. Recruits, trains and works closely with interns and volunteers. Also answers crisis calls, responds to emergencies, provides coverage of the shelter, provides transportation (with own vehicle if necessary) and maintains a functioning office and shelter.
Qualifications:
- Enjoys and has experience working with women and children of different backgrounds. Understands and appreciates Asian/Pacific Islander cultures; is able to work with diverse communities (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age, transgender, class, etc.).
- Committed to eliminating family violence and violence against women, including spousal and child abuse. Practices non-violence, including non-corporal child discipline.
- Experience in case management and facilitating children's programs.
- Experience in working with community-based organizations such as and not limited to public and social service agencies, schools and faith-based groups.
- Plans work schedule respective to program needs, coordinates multiple tasks, has strong work ethic and is well organized.
- Able to work in a flexible, evolving environment and is willing and able to work evenings and weekends.
- Addresses crises and conflict through open communication.
- Cantonese/Vietnamese/Mandarin or bilingual in API language and/or bicultural preferred.
